Meeting Between United States of America and People’s Republic of China Highlights Artificial Intelligence and Its Risks and Sustained Human Control in Decision-Making Processes on the Use of Nuclear Weapons
President Joseph R. Biden Jr. met with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China in Lima, Peru, on November 16, 2024[1].
The two leaders reviewed bilateral relations over the past four years and assessed efforts to responsibly manage the competitive aspects of their relationship and advance areas of cooperation, including the fight against narcotics, risks associated with AI, and climate change, since the Woodside Summit in November 2023.
The White House emphasized that the two countries will continue to have a candid and constructive dialogue on AI and co-sponsor AI-related resolutions at the United Nations General Assembly. The two leaders also reaffirmed the need to address the risks of AI systems, improve AI security and international cooperation, and promote AI for the good of all.
The leaders also emphasized maintaining human control over nuclear weapons use decision-making processes rather than AI, carefully assessing potential risks, and developing AI technology in the military domain in a prudent and responsible manner.
